What does diversity mean? Thinking about diversity
Good night!
Various “terms” have surrounded us and permeated our lives. I feel like I know the words somehow. But do I understand them concretely or can I explain them? This is a series of articles that attempts to put such “vaguely” into “easy-to-understand” terms.
Diversity” is a word that we hear more and more often these days and has become a part of our lives. What exactly does it mean? Does it just mean that there are many different kinds of people? In this issue, I would like to delve into somewhat of diversity. I hope you will bear with me until the end.
What is Diversity?
Diversity, in Japanese, is “tayousei” (diversity). As it is in the Chinese characterDiverse = various, variousThere must be something that isThis means.
Diversity” is a noun that originally meant “variety” in English. The word is composed of the words “diversity” + “diversity” and “diversity” + “diversity”. https://www.weblio.jp/content/ダイバーシティ
Even before the word “diversity” took root, the Japanese language had the words “jyunin jushiki” (ten different people) and “senka manbunbetsu” (a multitude of differences). As the characters indicate, each person is different, meaning that there are many different kinds of people.
No one in the world is the same as you. Nationality, race, gender, age, way of thinking, religion, and many, many other things. To appreciate diversity begins with knowing these many “characteristics,” or individualities.
Even if you don’t go as far as understanding and acceptance, the first step is to say, “I see. I see. There are all kinds of people. This is the first step to understanding diversity.
Minorities and Diversity
In delving into diversity, there is one important point. That is that each person has the same value.
Minority and diversity tend to be talked about at the same time, don’t they? However, we do not necessarily focus only on minorities.
Of course, because there are so few of them, there are few opportunities for them to be known without attention. Therefore, we tend to have the impression that we must pay attention to the minority, but basically, we must pay attention to each and every one of them.
Regardless of “majority” or “minority” as well as other differences. The idea of diversity is that various characteristics are respected.

Diversity in the workplace
Let’s consider the relationship between “work” and diversity. It is used in a sense that includes not only the word diversity, but also “making use of it”.
Respect diversity and incorporate a variety of human resources, acknowledging each individual’s differences. We will not be bound by differences, but will maximize individual performance and enable the company to grow. This is the meaning of what is called diversity management.
Behind the scenes, An increase in global work. The declining birthrate and aging population mean that fewer people are working. The diversity of working styles and desires of workers. These are some of the reasons why we need to respond to these issues. We want as many people as possible to be able to work with vigor and enthusiasm while combining their individuality, characteristics, and strengths. Diversity in the workplace is believed to increase productivity.
Why is it important to be diverse?
Why is it important to be diverse? Why is it better to work in a way that values individuality instead of working the same way for everyone?
A variety of people can work!
First of all, it may seem obvious, but by respecting the individuality and strengths of each person, a wide variety of people can work. This will eliminate bias in the workforce, which was difficult to achieve by simply dividing people by gender or age.
New ideas emerge from a variety of perspectives!
Furthermore, by working together and appreciating each other’s perspectives and ideas, ideas that could not have been conceived alone will be born. When people who work togetherarbitrarilyWhen people are all together, or all bring similar ideas to the table, there is no room for disagreement or concern, and dangerous decisions can be made. That can be scary.
Is diversity always a good thing?
So far we have talked about the good things about diversity. Now let’s talk about the not-so-good things about the opposite.
Bringing different values and personalities together can easily cause confusion at first. If you suddenly bring in someone who is completely different from you, yes, please get along with them. Please accept each other. Not all people can do that immediately.
This may result in disruption to the company or a temporary inability to do good work.
So, in a word, let’s value diversity! We need to be well prepared! requires sufficient preparation. The company needs to be prepared, and the people who work for the company need to be prepared as well.

We would love to hear your thoughts on “diversity.
