At mgn, we have decided to publish our own “ways of working” under the blog name, “Hataraku LENS”. The goal of this is to write and share our experiences of “how to work” from our own perspectives (as much as we can).
Even if the company has one single goal, each employees has different ways of thinking. Therefore, it is only natural that each employees has their own strengths and weaknesses. As a company organization, we bring all of these things together to work toward a single goal. However, there are not many opportunities to learn about how each individual thinks, solve problems, and confront their issues.
First of all, I would like to say that I myself am interested in reading what other employees think and how they face their challenges.
It’s uncomfortable for old people to work from home
Now, when I was asked to write something about my own “working style,” I couldn’t come up with anything. I am an old man who is still stuck in the Showa era, or so they called the “old ways of working”. It is ingrained in my body. I can’t work at Starbucks with my computer open because I don’t feel comfortable at all, and I want to go out for a drink after work.
I don’t think that sharing such an old man’s way of working will be of any use to you, but I would be happy if I could write something useful for when the readers of this article become older in the future. Though I’m sure that I cannot write anything useful, so please don’t expect too much.
mgn and remote work
mgn has been working remotely even before Covid 19. This is because web-related work can be done anywhere as long as you have a computer, a network, and a power supply. There is no need to go to work in the morning during rush hour, and no need to spend time getting ready for work in the busy morning hours. I don’t have to waste my precious time in the morning or at night commuting to work.
However, there are times when text-only communication is not enough. Sometimes, when you are writing a text message, it can be time consuming and actually talking is a much faster way to convey your message across. There are also times when words are not enough when only text is used, in which can lead to misunderstandings.
Therefore, mgn uses communication tools like Zoom and Gather as a replacement for “going to work”. If the camera is on, I can see my employee’s faces and their emotions, and even if it is off, it is still easy to talk to them. It is easy to have meetings with the required members, and if someone wants to concentrate, they can just move to another area.
The question is, “Where is the old man’s entity now?
Meaning of “company’s office” under remote working
This is a completely personal situation for me, but I don’t want to be at home.
No, it is not that I don’t want to be at home, it is just I don’t have a my own space at home.
I cannot think of a good word to summarize nor a good way to explain it. Simply, my apartment is small, so if I want to do any work, I would have to use the kitchen table. And that place is in conflict with my daughter’s study area.
You could say that I should just move to a different place as soon as possible, but for various reasons, I just have to stay in my current apartment for the time being. This means that conflicts will continue to occur. I want to avoid that somehow.
I don’t really want to work in a café because I don’t feel comfortable. I could consider using a co-working space, but it depends on my mood. In general, I just think it depends on the user rather than the space itself. But there is a solution to this problem.
One way to solve this problem is to “come to work” at the company’s office.
Disadvantages and advantages of going to work

As mentioned above, there are various disadvantages of going to work. If you are renting a place for a company’s office, you have to pay rent. Nowadays, there are even co-working spaces where you can register your company, so there is almost no reason why you need to have a company office.
Though, for me the biggest reason why I still want to come to work in the office is because I want to be able to switch things up.
When I am at work, I work, and when I go home, I have a private life. This is the common work style in the Showa era. However, this is not the case with remote work. You have to decide where and when you want to work, and you have to be able to separate your private life from your work life. I probably cannot manage that well.
If I stay home, I would probably mess around all the time and not work. I would read my favorite books or do some random things around the house, and I would end up not getting any work done even after a day has passed. Pretty sure that’s what I’ll do. So, to be honest with you, for as long as I can, I don’t want to work from home.
Advantages of having an actual office building
It may sound exaggerated to call it an “office building,” but to us, it is “an office”. You may think of the term “office building” as this huge building, but actually mgn’s office is a small house in Nishi-Shinjuku. I’m pretty sure you can imagine how small it is with only one room on the first floor and one on the second floor. The building seems to be 40 to 50 years old.
When we first rented this building, our first impression was that it was old and looked like a grandma’s house. Since it is an old building, I thought of arranging the furnishings in a Showa-esque manner, but of course with many respects, it is because of mgn that I can arrange it in such a way.
At mgn, each member’s computer, monitor, chair, and other items used for work are provided by the company. As long as it is within the company’s budget, each member can freely choose what to purchase according to his or her own preferences. This is the same for me. Just that in my case, my utilities are in the office rather than at home. And so, my office has somewhat becomes like my room…
Also, it is certainly convenient to have an office for times when my team members want to “get together” for some reason. Not only that, I have no trouble finding a place to hold a meeting and I can always check the mail that arrives at the office. Then, if someone comes over, we can have ice cream at the rooftop.
Someone’s Convenience is Someone else’s Inconvenience
mgn is still a small company with only about 10 people. Everyone, from the CEO to the employees, is working hard every day to fulfill our client’s goals. Even so, not everyone has exactly the same ideas.
One might say it is individuality, but of course it is not the sole factor. The way we think, the way we receive things, and the experiences we have had are all different. Rather than trying to fit them all into one, in mgn, when there is a different way of thinking, we accept the difference as “That’s just how it is” and then try to consider, “What is the best way to carry out as a team”.
When you want to control people or events, the easiest way is to “bind” them. By saying “no” and decide with this method, things can (and in some cases do) go more smoothly. On the other hand, if you listen to everyone’s requests, “I want this,” “I want that,” “I hope that,” you will not be able to put together what you want, and it will cost you extra time and money.
Still, mgn chose to do it together. It is obvious that this is not an easy route, but we are all willing to try. We do not know when or how it will turn out, but all of us are working hard every day to be able to say, “We chose this and the result turned out well”.
